Our school celebrated Read Across America Week with a daily Dr. Seuss book theme. Ms. Colglazier, Castañeda librarian, also discussed Dr. Seuss's writing style with students and read some of his books when they came to library class. Our kids always have fun dressing up for this reading event!

Students in first thru fifth grade who met their 4th six weeks grade level goal participated in the AR Party held March 3, 2020. They were treated to a doughnut and each student got a free book from the Molina Foundation Grant. Ms. Colglazier also raffled off 12 posters from Scholastic Company.

Selected fifth grade students had the chance to see presentation of award winning children's book author, Angela Cervantes at Lopez HS Auditorium on February 25, 2020.

In observance of the holidays, selected fourth and fifth grade students participated in this year’s Christmas Reading Restaurant. They read Christmas books and other holiday themed stories to Pre-K and Kinder classes.

Parents of PK and Kinder students came to read to their children in observance of Family Engagement Week held from November 15-21, 2019. The theme was “Reading is to the Mind as Exercise is to the Body”. Everyone had a wonderful time reading and exercising!

veterans day presentation
In observance of Veterans Day, all fourth grade classes had an opportunity to listen about the history behind Veterans Day. Mr. Ramiro Burnias, a veteran and his wife Mrs. Amparo Burnias, former Castañeda teacher, did a presentation explaining the importance of this holiday and the different ways the community celebrate the sacrifices of our veterans. Students were really engaged as they asked Mr. Burnias about his work experiences in the military. To all veterans, thank you for your service!

Castañeda Elementary celerated Hispanic Heritage Month with a literature based musical play based on the book "The Three Cabritos" by Erick Kimmel. The play was directed by Mrs. Cathy Cantu, Music teacher and performed by selected third grade students. It was followed by presentation of selected first grade students and a Latin dance by selected fifth grade students.

Dr. Rene Saldaña, author of the book "Hit It, Hit It, Hit It: A Fiesta of Numbers : Dale, Dale, Dale: Una Fiesta de Numeros" visited Castañeda in celebration of El Dia De Los Niños/Libros. He also had the pleasure of watching his book come alive as selected second grade students performed his book, a literature- based musical play directed by Mrs. Cathy Cantu, Music teacher.

Josephine Castaneda Library was a recipient of the 2015 Laura Bush Foundation Grant in the amount of $7,000 to update and expand the library collection.
MOLINA FOUNDATION BOOK GRANT
Josephine Castañeda Elementary received a book grant of 666 books from The Molina Foundation as part of the organization's Holiday Book Grant campaign.

Castañeda celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a musical play based on the Pura Belpre honor book, "Tito Puente: Mambo King", written by Monica Brown and illustrated by Rafael Lopez. The play was directed by Mrs. Catherine Cantu, Music teacher, and performed by selected third grade students.
author Lupe Ruiz-Flores visits castaÑeda
Third, fourth, and fifth grade students had the pleasure of listening to a presentation by Texas author Lupe-Ruiz Flores. Mrs. Flores has written several award-winning bilingual books for children. She did an excellent job explaining to students the process of writing and publishing a book.

Eligible 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students voted for their favorite book on this year's Texas Bluebonnet list and had fun participating in the Bluebonnet celebration. The book that got the most number of votes and won was "The Day the Crayons Quit" by Drew Daywalt.
